National Scientific Center «Ноn. Prof. М.S. Bokarius Forensic Science Institute»
On June 21, 2024, a five-day training course for forensic experts of National Scientific Center «Hon. Prof. M. S. Bokarius Forensic Science Institute» (hereinafter referred to as NSC FSI) on the use of the latest software, Skeleton-ID, was completed. The event was organized pursuant to a trilateral cooperation agreement between the Spanish research group Panacea Cooperative Research, NSC FSI, and the leading Luxembourg company Artec Europe. Under the terms of this agreement, and thanks to the one-year free usage of this software, NSC FSI will be recognized as one of the leading forensic institutions in Ukraine and will become the main provider of technology in the DVI settings of Panacea Cooperative Research and Artec Europe.
Skeleton-ID software is an innovative set of solutions based on AI for high-accuracy personal identification. It allows specialists to compare a three-dimensional model of a human skull with ante-mortem photographs to determine positive or negative identity matches. The software employs identification methods such as craniofacial superimposition, radiographic comparison, and biological profiling.
Thanks to the knowledge and skills acquired during training on the use of the Skeleton-ID software, forensic experts and scientists at the NSC FSI will be able to significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of person identification in forensic examinations. This, in turn, will contribute to enhancing the quality of research and the level of trust in expert conclusions. Moreover, the implementation of modern technologies in the activities of the NSC FSI will promote its further development and strengthen its position as a leading scientific institution in the field of forensic examination in Ukraine.
The Skeleton-ID software is particularly beneficial during the Russian aggression against Ukraine. During the war, the ability to identify deceased and missing persons (when DNA analysis is not possible) is extremely important for documenting war crimes and providing assistance to affected families. The high accuracy and reliability of Skeleton-ID will contribute to uncovering the truth and restoring justice in these challenging circumstances.
Artec Europe and Panacea Cooperative Research are actively supporting Ukraine. Artec Europe, in particular, has provided Ukraine with 30 advanced 3D scanners, while Panacea Cooperative Research has conducted training, provided the relevant methodology, and granted free access to their software.
We sincerely thank our partners! Together, we will prevail!
